Pat Turner

"The wharf in Union Bay was huge and you could hear the work going on there all day long."

Pat Turner is a wealth of information on Union Bay. Her family originated in Cumberland before they moved to Union Bay when her mother was a child. Pat has an avid fascination with antiques. One such interesting item that highlights her interest is a can of butter that has been in their family for over seventy years.

Pat has memorabilia from the Cumberland Restaurant as well as the from Union Bay’s Willis Hotel which belonged to her family. She gave us a very interesting interview, as her family was one of the pioneer families on the Island. She has news clippings and photos to tell the story of her Union Bay roots.

Pat’s Story

My grandfather worked in the mine and also opened the Cumberland Restaurant. The restaurant was open twenty-four hours a day; mom laughed when the Mohawk opened for twenty-four hours a day too. The kids thought that was so cool. Many people do not realize Cumberland was a lot bigger then.

"When my grandfather worked in the mine he was injured at work; and was in hospital for two weeks with internal injuries. They sent him home and he died shortly after from his injuries.
