"I have lived in Cumberland all my life. Never wanted to live anywhere else; this is the best place." Harry Puddin Westfield is a Cumberland boy - born and raised - and proud of it. He was born at home, delivered by a mid-wife, on Windermere Avenue in Cumberland, in 1913. He had a brother who became a baker and two sisters, one married a high school principal and the other married a government worker. |

Harry followed in his father’s footsteps, and went underground. He is proud to be a miner and enjoys sharing his stories of work, play, and life in a coal mining town. Harry’s Story “I have lived in Cumberland all my life. Never wanted to live anywhere else, this is the best place. When I was a boy, I had a job mowing the grass and watering along the boulevard between Frelonie’s Store and the Post Office, and I also had a paper route. My best friends were Jacky Thompie Thompson and Tommy Blabbermouth Adamson, Blabby for short. We always got into trouble together; we were mischievous. One of our favourite games was played with rocks; one guy set a small rock on top of a big rock, and then the other guys had three small rocks each, to try to knock the first guy’s rock down. If the rock was knocked off, the first guy had to stand against the wall while the rest of them took turns throwing a tennis ball at him - one shot each! |
