Fred’s Story "In the spring of 1937, Fred Jenkins, a young seventeen year old lad under pressure of a depression and vast unemployment set off on the first stage of a colorful adventure. The idea to find a job in a gold mine in the mountains of Vancouver Island was no small decision. "With the blessing of his father, he boarded the SS Maquinna, a coaster bound for the small village of Zeballos on the northwest coast of Vancouver Island. After two days steaming up the coast and through towering fjords, the vessel arrived in Zeballos. Disappointment followed, as he was to find out that the welcoming party on the dock was not for him but for the first arrival of the vessel at the newly built dock. |
