When I saw deer and bear grazing almost side by side I thought - this is paradise.

Armin and his wife Karin arrived for the interview at our office with memorabilia and photos of his career at Myra Falls. With great enthusiasm he shared his love of working at the mine and his fascination with the natural wildlife that surrounds the mine. He felt like he was in paradise!

Born in Germany in 1939, Armin Hoffmann began his mining career in Yellowknife, North West Territories before moving to Vancouver Island. He had a keen appreciation for the wildlife that lives in harmony with the NVI Mining Limited operations in Strathcona Provincial Park.

Armin’s Story

My father was a hard rock miner in Germany, and I got into mining because it was a well paying job and the opportunity was there.

“After ten years in Yellowknife, I started at Western Mines at Myra Falls in 1974. My wife Karin and I could have come here when it first opened, but the road to the mine did not exist and men and materials were transported across Buttle Lake on a ten day on - four off shift schedule. Since we had five children it was not to our liking, so I passed it up. When we did come to Campbell River, the road was built and the start of shift bus service made it possible for me to be home every day.
